Description
Presented is a handsome English Georgian sterling silver serving platter. The platter is superb quality, extremely well-made. The oval platter has an attractive gadrooned design around the rim. There is a fine crest in the form of a shield with three lion’s heads on it. The tray is very well made and has good weight. This piece, although certainly not large enough for a roast or a turkey, is a great size. It would be practical for serving dozens and dozens of food articles. The underside of the tray is hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard’s head crowned for London, the date letter ‘n’ for 1788, the duty mark of King George III’s head, and a maker’s mark of AF over SG for Andrew Fogelberg and Stephen Gilbert. This tray also has the original scratch weights on the reverse of 31 troy ounces and 5 pennyweights. This equals 968 grams. The current weight is approximately 964 grams, so this piece has lost only 4 grams of its weight over the past 220 plus years, pretty remarkable. Also engraved on the bottom is No. 5, clearly indicating that this piece was part of a much larger service at one time. Obviously owned by an extremely wealthy individual, probably a member of English royalty.
The tray has surface scratches and knife marks to the flat surface, as expected, but otherwise the condition is excellent. There are no dents, no splits, no breaks, and no repairs.
The platter measures 10 inches by 15 inches.
The weight is 963.7 grams or 33.8 ounces.
