    Description

Nice, partial collection of brass apothecary weights in small wooden box with cover.
Contains 4 of the 6 original weights:
    - 1 ea - 4 DR (drams)
    - 1 ea - 2 DR (drams)
    - 1 ea - 1 DR (drams)
    - 1 ea - 2 SC (scruple)
As you can see in the photos, these four weights have the flattened top on the small pickup knob.  Imprinted into this flat knob on the four weights is the weight along with DR or SC.  This indicates that these are from the late 1800's - to early 1900's - according to my research.  I would guess these came from Germany but there is no way to be certain.  They were certainly used as apothecary weights as the 'scruple' unit is an apothecary term.  A scruple is a unit of weight in the apothecaries' system - equal to 20 grains, or one third dram.
There is also a slot for a pair of tweezers to allow the handling of the weights without touching them - they are no longer with the set.
There is no indication on the weights or box of the maker or origin country.  The wooden base block also has a pocket for small flat pieces of metal that were probably marked in units of scruples, These are usually small metal pieces weighing 1-5 scruples each.
Measurements of the case are 5 1/2" L X 1 3/4" W X 1 1/2" H.  It has the original brass hinges and clasp.  The box is made by an obviously talented craftsman.  It has some dents and scratches from use and age but is still study.
By watching carefully here on eBay and in antique stores it will be possible to fill in some of the dram weights and scruple chips with matching pieces.  I have done so in my own collection.
Please study the photos carefully - this is the exact item and pieces you will receive.  If you have a question or wish additional photos please ask via eBay mail.
Thank you for looking at my weights and their box.
