Here we have a
RARE Antique 'BRIDAL' PLOW PLANE by HIGGS, London, w/ Early Riveted Brass & Steel Skate.
James Higgs worked as planemaker at three different addresses in London, England from 1785-1820. His son, Edward, continued on in the business until 1827. The makers stamp is on the toe and is partial obstructed by an owner stamp.  This is a RARE 'Bridal' Fenced plane with a side mounted accessory handle.  You NEVER see these for auction on eBay !!!  This beech plane is in Excellent 'used tool' condition !!  This 'Bridal' style plane is crafted in exquisite detail with finely milled grooves inside the fence rods such that the adjustable beech top plate can be indexed properly as the large tightening thumbscrew is turned.  The screw is turned into a central brass column that is anchored with a plate on the bottom of the fence !!  It is a beautifully engineered fence  !  The plane has very early brass & steel skate that uses large rivets to attach it to the body.  The plane also has a very nice working brass & steel depth stop.  The plane comes with one 1/4" cutting iron. The wedge has some minor bruising and staining.  The plane fence is 8-1/2"L.  The plane is 10-1/4" wide from the tip of the accessory handle to the fence rod ends. No cracks, breaks or repairs.
