Stanley Bailey No. 6C Fore Plane Type 10. 1907-1909
.
For your consideration is this Stanley 6C, totally restored and tuned to perfection.
This was a barn find in fine shape. Approximately 98% original japanning present and in good shape. I gave it a coat of minwax clear laquer to cover the few spots where the japanning was no longer present to prevent further deterioration. This was followed up by CRC rust protectant and beeswax orange polish for a great feel.
Next I lapped the sole to 150 grit, a flat sole is essential to high performance. The back of the blade was also lapped and polished. The bevel is hollow ground and hand sharpened with diamond plates, finishing on a leather strop with green honing compound. The blade is full length, having seen light use. I also tuned the chip breaker to ensure solid contact with the blade.
The tote and knob were also striped and sanded, then refinished with tru oil. This finish is typically used for gun stocks due to its excellent durability. The tote did have a mid body crack which I repaired with polyurethane glue (gorilla glue) this is the most effective glue with oily tropical hardwoods.
I enjoy this process and am proud of my work, this plane will be an excellent user for the rest of your woodworking life. This plane is sharp and ready right out of the box.
